Smart web pages
Smart web pages that adjust to different screen sizes
No special "mobile" page - the web page is for everyone.
We at Hugsmiðjan have chosen a new approach to designing web pages for small computers and mobile phones. No matter what device you use - the page is always the same.
The only thing that changes is the design
- on conventional screens the page appears as before
- on medium-wide screens (e.g. tablets or small laptops) the columns narrow a little and compress
- on small screens (e.g. mobile phones) almost all the content goes to one column. The design becomes simpler and photos smaller
...but the URL remains the same, the text is the same, the options and opportunities are the same.
The users needs are always the same - regardless of their screen size
The conventional wisdom that mobile phone users must be on the run while computer users are stationary is simply wrong. People use mobile phones sitting on the couch and laptop users connect remotely over 3G.
What everyone wants, regardless of equipment, is the same:
A clear, functional page with well-prioritized content
A gracefully designed page that works fast and well
Screen space is the only thing you can be sure is different for users on a computer and a mobile phone.
We start by thinking small - focus on the core
The best way to organize and prioritize content is to start by thinking of the screen size for mobile phones/handhelds. That brings out merciless prioritization and diagnosis of the real needs of the customer.
When that base has been established you're almost there.
Then the only thing left is to decide whether to add extra material for the biggest screen. For smaller devices, such material can either be added to the bottom of the page or set up in a way so that users have to push a button/link to see it.
Then there is conventional site design, with the innovation that the look for all stages down to the handheld is considered at the same time.
Basic principles - efficiency and accessibility
We believe that this is the right approach, both technically and ideologically, for almost all web pages and almost every type of web-based software. (Occasionally web pages and software could benefit from a special mobile version.)
We know that mobile and small-screen usage will increase greatly, and people will demand the same services regardless of what kind of computer or technology they are using.
In our eyes this approach is both sensible and efficient, but also an inseparable part of our vision of fantastic accessibility to the things the world wide web has to offer, for everyone.
